From Northbridge rock bars to Fremantle institutions, Perth's live music scene is fierce and independent. Here's where to find the best gigs in WA.

Perth is isolated from the rest of Australia by 2,700km of desert, and that isolation has bred something fierce – a live music scene that's independent, tight-knit, and ridiculously good. Perth bands stick together, Perth crowds are loyal, and Perth venues know exactly what they're doing.

Freo.Social (Fremantle)

Housed in a heritage-listed former artillery drill hall in Fremantle, Freo.Social is Perth's most exciting venue. The 800-capacity room has killer sound, the outdoor area is perfect for the WA climate, and the on-site brewery means the beer is always fresh. The programming ranges from national tours to local showcases, and the Freo location adds a laid-back coastal vibe you won't find in the city.

Best for: All genres, festivals, national tours | Capacity: 800

The Rosemount Hotel (North Perth)

The Rosie is Perth's equivalent of Melbourne's Corner Hotel – a beloved pub that's been the launching pad for countless WA artists. The main room sounds great, the front bar has free music, and the beer garden is one of the best in Perth. It's where Tame Impala, Pond, and half the psychedelic scene cut their teeth.

Best for: Rock, psych, indie, local acts | Capacity: 500

Amplifier Capitol (Perth CBD)

The Amp is Perth's premier mid-size venue, sitting right in the CBD and hosting the biggest tours that come through WA. The 600-capacity room delivers excellent production, and the central location makes it the easiest venue to get to in the city. When a band says they're "playing Perth," they usually mean the Amp.

Best for: National and international tours | Capacity: 600

The Bird (Northbridge)

Northbridge's The Bird combines a main room with an outdoor courtyard that's become one of Perth's favourite weekend hangouts. The programming spans indie, electronic, and hip-hop, with a healthy rotation of local and interstate acts. The cocktail bar is a cut above your average venue, too.

Best for: Indie, electronic, hip-hop | Capacity: 400

Jack Rabbit Slim's (Northbridge)

Part bowling alley, part live music venue, part American diner – Jack Rabbit Slim's is unlike anything else in Perth. The retro-themed Northbridge venue hosts live bands alongside bowling lanes and burger service, creating a night out that's part gig, part entertainment complex. It's as fun as it sounds.

Best for: Rock, party bands, unique nights out | Capacity: 350

Mojo's Bar (North Fremantle)

Mojo's is where Perth's underground lives. This North Fremantle bar has been hosting the weird, wonderful, and loud since forever, with a booking policy that favours the experimental and the local. The room is small enough that you can feel the bass in your chest, and the crowd is always in on it.

Best for: Garage, psych, experimental, local | Capacity: 250

Badlands Bar (Perth)

Badlands is Perth's rock 'n' roll bar – a dark, loud, unapologetic celebration of guitar music. The 200-capacity room hosts live bands most nights, the drink prices are reasonable, and the atmosphere is electric. If you like your music heavy and your venues honest, Badlands is your place.

Best for: Rock, metal, punk | Capacity: 200
